On April 8, 2003 the Federal Register announced a
public meeting (via satellite downlink) to discuss the
maintenance and inspection of records for foods under The Food and
Drug Administration (FDA). The Federal Register writes
that "the purpose of the satellite downlink public meeting is
to provide information on the proposed rules to the public and to
provide the public an opportunity to ask questions or to provide
comment."
This satellite downlink public meeting will be held on May 7, 2003,
1 to 3 p.m. eastern standard time and will address the following
issues:
Section 303 (Administrative Detention) of the Bioterrorism Act which
authorizes FDA to detain food if the agency has credible evidence or
information that the food presents a threat of serious adverse
health consequences or death to humans or animals.
Section 306 (Maintenance and Inspection of Records for Foods) of the
Bioterrorism Act which authorizes FDA, by regulation, to
require persons that manufacture, process, pack, transport,
distribute, receive, hold, or import food to create and maintain
records that FDA determines are necessary to identify the immediate
previous sources and the immediate subsequent recipients of food.
There are several sites in the United States where interested
importers can participate in the satellite public meeting. For
