The United States and Australia have
concluded a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This FTA
provides duty free treatment for manufactured goods as well as
most agricultural goods from Australia. One hot import
item from Australia that doesn't benefit from free trade is
sugar. Australian sugar is still subject to quota
restraints. We will advise once this FTA goes into
effect.
The Central American Free Trade Agreement
(CAFTA) will be voted on in Congress this year. CAFTA would
extend duty free status to goods from Costa Rica, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. At
least 80 percent of goods coming from these countries would
immediately enjoy duty free status. Economists, however,
do not predict a significant impact on the economy citing the
fact that Mexico produced $900 billion in goods and services
for the U.S. market, whereas these countries combined only
produced $108.4 billion in goods and services destined for the
USA.
