Rates for east bound Ocean containers from Asia will be going up
starting May 1, 2003. But how much is still not a settled
issue, although the increase should be around 700 U.S. dollars per
forty foot container. This is the figure being quoted by such
steam ship lines as China Shipping, Norasia and Hyundai.
However, we note at this time, that due to the SARS outbreak in
China and its potential impact on economy and trade, the rates may
be negotiable. Right now we are in the "wait and
see" mode.
Also, on the note of rate increases, the Journal of Commerce
states that trans-Atlantic carriers are increasing general rates
on west bound cargo to the USA by 400 dollars per twenty foot
container and 500 dollars per forty foot container. However,
U.S. cargo heading east to Europe will only see an increase of 160
dollars and 200 dollars for twenty and forty foot containers,
respectively.
