The SARS epidemic is impacting imports from the Far East in the
electronics industry. According to a recent article in the
Journal
of Commerce, some of the consequences are:
- cancellations and postponements of trade shows and conferences
- spot purchases of components from China have ceased
- original equipment manufacturers have shifted spot procurement
to U.S. and European sources as a hedge against supply-chain
interruptions
A 30 percent loss of passengers in and out of Hong Kong is also
reducing air cargo flights from Hong Kong. Intra-Asia air
freight rates are expected to double.
