SARS and Imports from the Far East

The SARS epidemic is impacting imports from the Far East in the electronics industry.  According to a recent article in the Journal of Commerce, some of the consequences are:
  • cancellations and postponements of trade shows and conferences
  • spot purchases of components from China have ceased
  • original equipment manufacturers have shifted spot procurement to U.S. and European sources as a hedge against supply-chain interruptions

A 30 percent loss of passengers in and out of Hong Kong is also reducing air cargo flights from Hong Kong.  Intra-Asia air freight rates are expected to double.
