The U.S. Customs Service is now under the departmental umbrella of the
Department of Homeland Security, which embraces 22
other former federal agencies.
According to John Heinrich, interim director of field operations in
Southern California for the new Bureau of Customs and Border
Protection, and as stated in the Journal of Commerce, Customs
under the Department of Homeland Security now means "that
low-risk cargo should be cleared faster, especially those shipments
that require multiple clearances."
The fact is that a lot of imported merchandise is not only subject to
the regulations of Customs but also subject to the regulations of
other government agencies. Under the Department of Homeland Security,
the various government agencies are working together so the lines of
communication should be closer and clearer. As noted by Mr.
Heinrich, "now that so many former federal agencies are in the
same department and share data, the clearance process should be
quicker."
