Look for the following Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) in 2003:
The US-Chile Free Trade Agreement is now up for ratification by
Congress
The US-Singapore FTA is almost complete. Once implemented, Duties
rates for most goods of Singapore origin can immediately enter the U.S.
duty free. Singapore will immediately eliminate all its duties.
Negotiations are beginning for FTAs with Central American countries like
El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
The US and Australia are also discussing a mutual free trade
agreement.
Free Trade Agreements increase trade between countries that negotiate
them. For example, in 1992, before the US and Mexico entered into
a free trade agreement (NAFTA), Mexico accounted for 6.4 percent of U.S.
imports. Today that figure is almost 12 percent.
